Crooked Brook Forest Open Day
Crooked Brook Forest 20 year celebration - Saturday 4th October 2014
The first weekend in October saw approximately 180 people gather in the Crooked Brook Forest, Dardanup to celebrate a twenty year partnership between local volunteers and the Shire of Dardanup.
Twenty years ago locals approached the then CALM seeking to use the forest to provide a safe place for elderly and disabled access to the wonderful wildflower shows and the native jarrah-marri woodland. CALM joined in and with additional support from the Shire of Dardanup twenty years later the facilities found in their forest are a haven for all. ‘A forest for all people’ is the motto. A rammed earth path from the car park provides a stable, all weather circuit around the small dam, BBQs, toilets, shelters and seats.
To recognise the twenty years partnership the Shire supported a Celebration and Open day in the forest. A free bus from nearby Bunbury and Eaton as well as shuttle bus from a farmer’s paddock brought the visitors in a steady stream. In congratulating the group Dardanup CEO Mr Mark Chester said that the Crooked Brook Forest Association “is a great example of a community with passion”. Deputy Shire President Cr Peter Robinson who is also the CBFA chairman acknowledged the significant contribution to the partnership of both DPaW (formerly CALM) and the Shire of Dardanup.
Following the formalities visitors to the forest enjoyed a sausage sizzle lunch, a slice of celebration cake and then took part in any of the following activities: face painting, craft activities, guided walks, fun runs and checking out the living creatures from the dam under microscopes.
Perfect weather and the marvellous spring wildflower display capped off a most successful day for all.
